The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for July 2018: Whistling Rufus was a very popular tune by Kerry Mills, first published in 1899 and recorded by many artists at that time. While it clearly meets the definition of a so-called "Coon Song", a racist musical genre of its time, this particular version (fortunately) lacks of the usual terms one could encounter. Being a band selection, it features a lot of period ragtime characteristics. The performing orchestra, however, is...

This particular recording was made in fall of 1901 and features the famous song from Carl Maria von Weber's opera Der Freischütz . The Cylinder Archive [ www.cylinder.de ] release for July 2013: The French Comic Opera supplied a great repertoire for the classical Edison recordings. This one pre-dates the Grand Opera Series from 1906, was recorded in 1904 and released as an Edison Gold Moulded cylinder. Altough some quite audible surface noise, the recording remains overall crisp and clear. The cylinder is self-announced by Cécile Merguillier herself.
